The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has relied upon its Environmental Benefits Mapping and Analysis Program (BenMAP) tool to estimate the changes in adverse health effects resulting from the changes in ambient air pollution. EPA and the scientific community expanded the science incorporated in the tool on topics such as causal relationships between pollutant exposures and health impacts, and air quality models (e.g., CMAQ) that are important to running and interpreting BenMAP-based analyses including the user interface and evolved computer science for internal data management. EPA has requested the SAB conduct a peer review of the BenMAP tool focusing specifically on technical aspects of the tool’s construction and performance. In addition, EPA has requested a more general review of the benefits methods used by the Agency as documented on the EPA technical support document, Estimating PM2.5- and Ozone-Attributable Health Benefits.
